Do your employees or members have prediabetes or other risk factors for type 2 diabetes? If so, now is the time to make a change. This lifestyle change program can help!
What is the National DPP?
The National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP or DPP) is a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) evidence-based healthy lifestyle change program. The goal of the program is simple: participants will learn to develop sustainable habits to eat healthier and increase their physical activity with the ultimate goal of losing at least 5 to 7% of their body weight.
During the program, participants not only lose weight, but they are establishing positive lifestyle changes that lower their risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
The PreventT2 Program Reduces the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
This Lifestyle Change Program is part of the National Diabetes Prevention Program, led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It features an approach that is proven to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. By improving food choices and increasing physical activity, participants can lose 5 to 7 percent of their body weight — that is 10 to 14 pounds for a person weighing 200 pounds. If you have prediabetes, these lifestyle changes can cut your risk of developing type 2 diabetes in half.
Prediabetes Can Lead to Type 2 Diabetes
One out of three American adults has prediabetes, and most of them do not know it. Having prediabetes means your blood glucose (sugar) level is higher than normal, but not high enough to
be diagnosed as diabetes. This raises your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
Without weight loss or moderate physical activity, many people with prediabetes can develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years. Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition that can lead to health issues such as heart attack; stroke; blindness; kidney failure; or loss of toes, feet, or legs.
How Does the DPP Lifestyle Change Program Work?
Watch this short video to get a sneak peek of the DPP in action, and hear from some of the participants and Lifestyle Coaches.
Our curriculum is a CDC-approved year-long program broken into three phases.
In phase 1, participants engage in weekly meetings for the first two months of the program.
In phase 2, we transition to bi-weekly meetings during months 3 – 5.
Phase 3 begins around the 6-month mark of the program. During this phase, we continue to meet monthly to help participants maintain healthy lifestyle changes.
By meeting with others who have prediabetes you can celebrate each other’s successes and work together to overcome obstacles.
The lifestyle changes you make in the PreventT2 program will help you prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.
As part of a PreventT2 group, participants will work with a trained lifestyle coach and other participants to learn the skills needed to make lasting changes. Some of these skills include:
- Learning how to eat healthy
- Adding physical activity to weekly routines
- Managing stress
- Staying motivated
- Problem-solving around obstacles to healthy changes
We can implement and deliver this program in a format that supports your company’s wellness initiatives and helps you build a healthier workforce.
